sys.platform in version 2.7.3 of IronPython running in Silverlight application returns a wrong value. In 2.7.1 sys.platform would return "silverlight". In 2.7.3 "cli" is returned.

Hello,

I am starting to use the pyc.py file to create a .exe file of my IronPython project. It seems that pyc.py cannot deal with programs that use external dlls. To be clear here are examples of something that worked and something that didn't:

program1.py :
```
print 'hello world'
raw_input('--->')
```
I managed to make a .exe file of program1.py which worked by using the following command:
```
ipy pyc.py /main:program1.py /target:exe
```
Now here is program2.py :
```
from clr import AddReferenceToFile
AddReferenceToFile ('myExternalDllForProgram2.dll')
raw_input('--->')
```

I managed to make a .exe file of program2.py using the same command that for program1.py. Problem is, the .exe file does not work (the result box writes a lot of things and fails at some point).

Of course, myExternalDllForProgram2.dll was put in the folder with the .exe file and its dll (and with these dlls as well: IronPython.dll, IronPython.Modules.dll, Microsoft.Scripting.Metadata.dll, Microsoft.Scripting.dll, Microsoft.Dynamic.dll)

Does any one have an idea of what could have gone wrong?

Commented Issue: CreateEngine never returns [34024]

I'm using a Desktop application on Windows 8, with some python scripts.

When I try to __call CreateEngine, this method never returns__.

If I use the code bellow, it starts working in debug mode, but if a create a build, with obfuscator code, it stops again.

AppDomain sandbox = AppDomain.CreateDomain("sandbox");
scriptEngine = Python.CreateEngine(sandbox);

Could you please give some solution.

This might be related to https://ironpython.codeplex.com/workitem/34020. Can you provide a complete example and what version of Visual Studio you're using?

It's not really an issue what I am posting.... but hey, I think, if CPython won't ever be fully accessable from IronPython then IronPython is a dead end..... sad but true.

I'm a C# programmer and I'm using IronPython in my software.... I really appreciate that it exists, but it cannot really compeat with existin Python distribution...... and if there won't be much developement around IronPython it is going to become extinct.....

I think Microsoft is going to loose more and more market share in the area of Software development, If they are not ging to promote their product better and try to make C# the leading development platform for windows!

CPython needs to become fully integrated and supported by IronPython, otherwise it won't ever be successful.....

I use ipy on both Solaris and Linux. I invoke it from within bash (gnome-terminal). Even when passing -X:ColorfulConsole, the main text is light gray. I'm not really sure how to work around this. So far I just live with it.

I found some problems in IronPython source code encoding.

1. When the python source file has both UTF-8 byte order mark (aka BOM) and PEP 0263 "# -*- coding: utf-8 -*-",
ipy.exe causes SyntaxError: file has both Unicode marker and PEP-263 file encoding.

2. When the UTF-8 python source file contains many Japanese letters,
some of them (at every 0x400 bytes) may be broken.
I attached test.py which contains many Japanese Hiragana Letter A (U+3042).

3. When I use Visual Studio 2008 to debug the python source file,
the debugger indicates the different position of the python source file.

I wrote the patch to fix these problems.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
In our Windows Form Tutorial sample there's a number of code fragments that could (should?) be made more Pythonic. Here are a few examples:
* there's a class in formv8.py that has named members such as "self._button1". I think what was actually intended here was "self.__button1" to make button1 a pseudo-private member. We need to fix this so new Python developers don't get confused
* there's lot of "from a import *" uses. Worse yet, there's also fragments like "import System\nfrom System import *"
* tabs and spaces are being used interchangeably

Generally speaking we should try to follow PEP 8 (http://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0008/) in all IronPython samples.

Workaround for now is to have both statements, the vim statement being the second.

Hi.
I tried making a Windows Forms application using IronPython Studio Tools for Visual Studio CTP2. This application uses the FolderBrowserDialog. It works great when I debug it inside the IDE. However, when I compile it with pyc.py (2.6.1 for .Net 4), the resulting application seem to work for everything but the FolderBrowserDialog. I tried both with /target:exe and /target:winexe. However, it works fine if I compile the app with SharpDevelop or if I run it as a script.

Thanks a lot for all the hard work!

PS: When can I expect to see compilation inside IronPython Studio Tools for Visual Studio?
