On behalf of the IronPython team, I'm happy to announce the first alpha release of IronPython 2.7.4. This release includes everything from IronPython 2.7.3 and earlier. Like all IronPython 2.7-series releases, .NET 4 is required to install it. Installing this release will replace any existing IronPython 2.7-series installation.

Improvements in IronPython 2.7.4 are mainly a collection of bug fixes, many of which are directed a getting IPython working, although it's not there yet.

Android and Silverlight 4 assemblies have been dropped from this version. The Android assemblies need some more work to be usable with Xamarin.Android, ans Silverlight 4 is just plain dead.

For Visual Studio integration, check out Python Tools for Visual Studio which has support for IronPython as well as CPython, and many other fantastic features.

IronPython 2.7.3 is also available for embedding via NuGet. The main package is IronPython, and the standard library is in IronPython.StdLib. Because this is a prerelease package, you must use -IncludePrerelease on the command line or select "Include Prerelease" from the package drop-down menu.

The incompatibility with IronRuby has been resolved, and they can once again be installed side-by-side.

The biggest improvements in IronPython 2.7.3 are:

the winsound and _bisect modules,
the bz2 module,
major improvements to the _ast module,
support for response files in pyc.py,
support for loading zip packages from resources,
the "SuperConsole" is now the default, which adds line history and tab-completion on all platforms,
improvements to Android support,
and numerous other bug fixes.

Due to major bugs, the Windows Phone 7 assemblies included in 2.7.2 are not included.

IMPORTANT: There is a known issue if IronRuby 1.1.3 is installed. You must uninstall IronRuby before installing IronPython 2.7.3. This will be resolved before the final 2.7.3 release.

On behalf of the IronPython team, I'm happy to announce the final release IronPython 2.7.2. This release includes everything from IronPython 2.7 and 2.7.1 as well. Like all IronPython 2.7-series releases, .NET 4 is required to install it. Installing this release will replace any existing IronPython 2.7-series installation.

Unlike previous releases, the assemblies for all supported platforms are included in the installer as well as the zip package, in the "Platforms" directory. IronPython 2.7.2 includes support for .NET 3.5, .NET 4, Silverlight 4, and Silverlight 5, and preliminary releases for Mono for Android 4.0 and Windows Phone 7.5. For 2.7.2, the mobile platforms are previews; they have known issues, and expect them to change for 2.7.3.

The biggest improvements in IronPython 2.7.2 are:

support for loading libraries from zip archives (the zipimport module);
the sqlite3 module;
many improvements to the pyc.py compiler, such as the ability generate standalone executables by embedding the IronPython assemblies;

UPDATE: There was a fairly serious regression in operator method resolution introduced between 2.7.2 RC1 and 2.7.2 (sys.version_info < tuple doesn't work like CPython). Updating to 2.7.2.1 is strongly recommended.

On behalf of the IronPython team, I'm happy to announce the first preview release of IronPython 2.7.2.

Like all IronPython 2.7-series releases, .NET 4 is required to install it. Installing this release will replace any existing IronPython 2.7-series installation.

Unlike previous releases, the assemblies for all supported platforms are included in the installer as well as the zip package. IronPython 2.7.2 Alpha 1 includes support for .NET 3.5, .NET 4, Silverlight 4, Silverlight 5, and Mono for Android 4.0. Check the "Platforms" directory for the required assemblies. Any feedback on the supported platforms, especially for Android, is greatly appreciated.

The intent is to add support for Windows Mobile 7.5 and MonoTouch prior to the final release of 2.7.2. Windows 8
"Metro" may also be supported, depending on when its first beta is released.

Otherwise, the biggest improvement in IronPython 2.7.2 is support for the zipimport module, thanks to Alex Earl. A handful of other bugs have been fixed as well.

The final release of IronPython 2.7.2 is currently set for March 11. Any fixes should be made available prior to the release of the RC on March 4th.

On behalf of the IronPython, I'm happy to announce the release of IronPython 2.7.1. Like IronPython 2.7, this release requires .NET 4 or Silverlight 4. This release will replace any existing IronPython installation.

The biggest improvement in IronPython 2.7.1 is support for the unicodedata, csv, and ats modules. The other Python standard library modules have been upgraded to match Python 2.7.2.

There has also been a number of bug fixes to make IronPython generally more compatible with CPython.

Finally, the IronPython Tools for Visual Studio have been deprecated in favour of the Python Tools for Visual Studio.

On behalf of the IronPython team, I'm very pleased to announce the release of IronPython 2.7. This release contains all of the language features of Python 2.7, as well as several previously missing modules and numerous bug fixes. IronPython 2.7 also includes built-in Visual Studio support through IronPython Tools for Visual Studio. IronPython 2.7 requires .NET 4.0 or Silverlight 4.

Python 2.7 includes a number of features backported from the Python 3.0 series. This release implements the new builtin _io module, includes dictionary and set comprehensions, set literals, supports multiple context managers in the with statement, and adds several new functions to the itertools methods, and auto indexing for the new string formatting. There are also numerous updates to the standard library such as ordered dictionaries and the new argparse module.

This release also includes a “IronPython Tools for Visual Studio” option within the IronPython installer. This enables one install to get both IronPython and IronPython Visual Studio support assuming you have an existing installation of Visual Studio 2010. This version of IronPython Tools includes a number of bug fixes as improved WPF designer support. The designer fully supports XAML and WPF including data binding to Python classes dynamically.

To improve interop with modern .NET code such as LINQ, support for extension methods has been added as the clr.ImportExtensions method.

We’ve also updated the IronPython installer to include documentation based upon the CPython documentation. This new .chm file includes documentation on the Python language and standard library. It’s been extended from the normal Python documentation to include IronPython specific topics such as the DLR hosting APIs and extending IronPython from statically typed .NET languages.

We flushed out more support for missing built-in modules which CPython includes. This release includes the mmap and signal modules bringing better support for interoperating with unmanaged code, the zlib and gzip modules for compression, and the subprocess and webbrowser modules for interacting with other programs.

As usual there are a number of bug fixes and performance improvements. This release includes major performance improvements in cPickle, the sum built-in function, and includes support for fast exceptions which do not use the .NET exception mechanism. There have also been improvements to significantly reduce memory usage of the IronPython ASTs. One of the end results of these numerous improvements is that IronPython’s startup time has decreased by 10% when compared to IronPython 2.6.1.

This is the first full community release of IronPython, and I want to give a huge thank you to everyone who was involved in this release.
